Yuri Anime – Girls with Guns

Noir, Madlax e El Cazador de la Bruja

It all began when the Bee Train studio released the Girl with Guns Trilogy: Noir, Madlax & El Cazador de la Bruja..

Anime-Noir Noir was the first of the trilogy, released in 2001. It became a instant hit in Japan and in other countries, like the USA and Germany. Noir reached the cult status between the otakus. The plot is complex and tells the story of two young female assassins who go together in a personal journey, searching answers about the misteries of their past. During this journey, they are lured into more and more traps by the secret organization called Les Soldats.

In the beginning, Mireille and Kirika are tied together just because of their misterious past and the common desire to find the truth. But, during the anime, they start to become more and more united. Noir is not an actual yuri series, but Mireille and Kirika do develop a special relationship at the end. Besides, Chloe admires Kirika alot and seems to be totally obsessed in love with her.

There is even a kiss between them. Actually, Chloe kisses Kirika while she is in some creepy state of mind, but a kiss is a kiss, right? Anyway, the point is that the friendship between Mireille and Kirika becomes something really beautiful, that doesn’t look like a normal friendship, but is still alot subtext

MadlaxAfter Noir, came Madlax. An anime as complex as the first or even more.

The plot has a similar concept as Noir. Two women that has something in common but don’t know each other. Madlax is a legend between the mercenaries and assassins of the civil war happening in Fazth-Sonika.

The other protagonist is Margaret Burton, the only heiress of a aristrocatic family in a calm european country called Nafrece.

Twelve years before the story begins, a plane where she was at crashes in Gazth-Sonika. She managed to survive and to get back to Nafrece alone, but how she did that remains a mistery, having in mind that she lost her memory prior to her return; the only thing she recalls is the word ‘Madlax’.

With this word linking them both, they start to investigate the powerfull crime syndicate called ‘Enfant’.

Alright.. Madlax has even less yuri than noir, but something was going on between Vanessa and Madlax, oh yea.

El-Cazador-de-la-Bruja El Cazador de la Bruja was the last part of the trilogy. The plot? Yeah, more girls without memory trying to figure out their past! But this time, the yuri is shown more than in the other two.

It tells the story of Ellis, a girl being chased by bounty-hunters. She has misterious supernatural powers that she can’t control. When Nadie, the most skilled of the bounty-hunters finds her, she decides to help Ellis instead of killing her. They both head south, searching for Ellis past.El-Cazador-de-la-Bruja-Ellis-Nadie

This series is way more lighter and less serious than Noir and Madlax. In the other hand, is more cute. The two protagonists become really found of each other. In a episode, Ellis even ask if they look like husband and wife.

I has alot of suspicious scenes between the two and even if a kiss doesn’t happen, theres is always a finger-sucking scene to fill in the blank.

Burst Angel e CANAAN

Burst-AngelIn the near future, due to an unusual rise in criminal activity, it has become legal to possess firearms in Japan so lawful citizens can protect themselves. At the same time, the government established the Recently Armed Police Taskforce, whose methods are exterminating criminals rather than arresting them.

The story opens with Kyohei Tachibana, a student at a culinary arts school with dreams of someday becoming a patissier, motorcycling down an inner city street and becoming caught up in a shoot-out between a mysterious silver-haired woman and a psycho gangster. Kyohei escapes unharmed and ends up working as a cook for Jo, Meg, Amy, and Sei in an effort to gather up enough money to travel to France. The girls, ranging in ages of eleven to nineteen, turn out to be pseudo-mercenary agents for a larger international group known as Bai Lan.

I’ve just watched the OVA, but from what it looks like El Cazador de la Bruja: Jo is always protecting Meg, who is always being saved and they have a strong bound.

CANAANTwo years ago, Shibuya was ravaged by a biological terrorist attack using the deadly Ua virus. Maria Osawa was saved when her father inoculated her against the virus, but is left with partial amnesia from the shock. She works as a cameraman when she reunites with a girl named Canaan in Shanghai, China. A gifted assassin with synesthesia, she is under orders from an unknown organization for a yet unspecified mission..

The plot is different from Burst Angel, but the characters have the same personalities. Hell, Canaan even dresses up like Jo. Maria gets in trouble and needs to be saved by Canaan, just like it happens in Burst Angel. She seems to be totally in love with Canaan. The protagonists share alot of scenes worthly of couples in love.

The fact is that this series blew me away. The animation is better than any of the others anime listed (maybe because of Type-Moon?), and the action sequences are so well made. Oh and there is also a villain who is totally obsessed by her own sister, who is the anime’s badass.

I think this genre has always been my favorite. Noir ranks among my top five anime ever, and the other ones were all very enjoyable. Bee Train did get successively worse though from Noir to Madlax to El Cazador.
